Joe BidenJanuary 26, 2015. The mammoth undertaking by the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority to convert from oil to less expensive LPG or propane for the generation of electricity at a lower cost to Virgin Islanders got some recognition at The White House this week.

Vice President Joe Biden praised the move by WAPA and also heralded the implementation of a photovoltaic array at the Cyril E. King Airport which has represented significant energy savings for the Virgin Islands Port Authority. Speaking at the Caribbean Energy Security Summit in Washington, Biden said that now was the time to boost alternative sources of energy such as solar and to decrease the reliance on oil.

In the Vice President's words, "Some people out there think that it can’t be done in the Caribbean. They are dead wrong. They are dead wrong. Not only can it be done, it is being done right now with some of your neighbors. Look at what the U.S. Virgin Islands are doing. They’re combining renewable energy with propane to lower costs and secure their supply, saving rate payers, 30 percent on electric bills, while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the fossil fuel fleet by 12 percent. You know solar photovoltaic facilities at the Cyril E. King Airport, where the port authority is saving nearly $1,000 a day. That’s real money.”
