WAPA Will Continue St. Thomas Feeder Rotation Schedule on Tuesday

7/22/2008

Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority engineers and technicians worked throughout the day on Monday to prepare gas turbine Unit #23 to receive a new part for its ratchet system. The part was shipped from Germany over the weekend. WAPA anticipates completing repairs by Wednesday and restoring stability to St. Thomas' Randolph E. Harley Power Plant once the 42-megawatt unit is back on line after one week of being out of service. According to Hugo Hodge, Jr. WAPA’s Executive Director, the utility will continue to rotate feeders every two hours on Tuesday in order to meet customers’ demand for electricity. Hodge said that while WAPA implemented a rotation schedule on Monday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the schedule was discontinued by 4 p.m. when WAPA was able to meet the mid- afternoon demand. Two of the larger hotels remained off line and generated their own power in order to assist WAPA in meeting its generation shortfalls.

WAPA will implement rotating outages on Tuesday, as necessary, according to the following schedule:
