WAPA CONTINUES ST. THOMAS WATER CONSERVATION SCHEDULE

8/25/2008

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority is advising its St. Thomas water customers that the utility revised the water conservation schedule to avoid disrupting the new school year operations. Until further notice, the Authority will provide normal operating pressures between the hours of 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily – service will be at reduced-pressure outside these normal operating pressure hours. Customers at higher elevations can expect reduced or a total loss of pressure during the scheduled reduced-pressure hours.

These schedules were implemented as a precautionary measure in order to preserve extremely low water reserves. On Sunday, August 17, a major pipeline feeding the three main water plants at the Randolph E. Harley Power Plant ruptured resulting in the total loss of water production. After an exhaustive around-the-clock effort, the pipeline was repaired late Thursday night and water production resumed early in the morning on Friday. The Authority would also like to express its appreciation to its employees and the contractor WMK for stepping in and providing invaluable support during this crisis.

Every effort will be made to restore normal water pressure to the affected areas as soon as possible. The Authority apologizes for any inconvenience caused as a result of this conservation schedule.
