WAPA ALERT:  WATER SERVICE UPDATE

Sunday, November 20, 2011

6 P.M.

ST. THOMAS WATER CONSERVATION SCHEDULE CONTINUES

AS REPAIRS PROGRESS IN THE PLANT

V.I. Water and Power Authority personnel are working around the clock to bring a boiler and several water plants on line and restore full water production at St. Thomas’ Harley Power Plant.  At present, water storage is critically low and, as a result, WAPA will be unable to pump water this evening, as intended.  Water will be pumped to all St. Thomas customers between 6 and 8 a.m. on Monday morning.  Customers are urged to plan accordingly.

WAPA regrets this inconvenience; however, the service schedule has been curtailed in order to ensure a sufficient supply of water to the schools on Monday until 3 p.m. WAPA is reminding customers that once WAPA begins to pump in the morning, it may take a short period for water pressure to build up to individual homes or businesses.  To avoid possible mishaps when water returns, please leave faucets in the closed position until water pressure is available.

WAPA is requesting that customers with cisterns primarily use that source of water to assist in relieving some of the demand on the system. This will help WAPA’s efforts to build storage over the next several days.

It is anticipated that a water conservation schedule will continue for the next several days but as storage rebuilds, more hours of availability will be added to the schedule. Please stay tuned to local radio stations, visit WAPA’s website at www.viwapa.vi or call 774-3552 and press #6 for periodic updates. Water haulers are advised that the St. Thomas standpipes are temporarily closed for operation at this time.

WAPA understands the inconveniences of intermittent water service and assures customers that personnel are working 24 hours a day to rectify this situation as soon as possible.  WAPA appreciates the patience of its customers and also acknowledges the support of the V.I. National Guard.  Guardsmen have erected several water plants at the Harley plant to assist in providing water services to St. Thomas customers.
