WAPA IMPLEMENTS EXTENDED WATER CONSERVATION SCHEDULE

(Wednesday, November 23, 2011)

WAPA ALERT – 4:30 p.m.

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority is advising its St. Thomas water customers of a revised water conservation schedule:

  • This evening water will be pumped from 7 to 9 p.m.
  • Thursday (Thanksgiving Day) – water will be pumped from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Effective Friday, November 25, the Authority will implement a 5 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. schedule for 7 – 10 days to allow time for storage build up.  Once there is sufficient storage, normal water operations will resume.

Every effort will be made to relax the conservation schedule as soon as possible.

Plant and water personnel completed repairs to Unit #11 on Tuesday and were able to put two additional desalination water plants on line. The increased water production will allow the significantly extended period of water availability on Thursday.

Once pumping begins, it may take a short period of time for water pressure to build up to individual homes or businesses at higher elevations. To avoid possible mishaps when water returns, the Authority is requesting that its customers leave faucets in the closed position until water pressure is available. Please help neighbors to maximize the limited amount of water available by using water conservatively, when available, and recycling bath and dish water to flush toilets, wash cars and water plants.

The Authority appreciates the patience and understanding of its customers since the conservation schedule has been in effect.
