WAPA Begins Cruzan Rum Underground Project

(Wednesday, February 29, 2012)

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority’s contractor, GEC LLC, is installing approximately 4,500 linear feet of 6-inch electrical conduits on St. Croix from the intersection of Route 64 (West Airport Road) and Route 66 (Melvin Evans Highway) to the Cruzan Rum Distillery. As construction has created detours, motorists are asked to be cautious when driving in the area to protect crews, pedestrians and other motorists in the area.

From Monday, March 5 to Friday, March 9, the eastbound and westbound traffic on Melvin Evans Highway and northbound and southbound traffic on the West Airport  Road will be interrupted between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Construction crews will be tying in the underground system to feeder #8. No power outages are anticipated while the work is in progress.  Again, drivers are urged to proceed cautiously and to follow traffic directions.

The Cruzan Rum Underground Expansion Project is expected to be completed within 90 days. The civil work phase of the project has been funded with the Authority’s 2010 Revenue Bond issue at a cost of $995,000.

WAPA appreciates the cooperation of the public during this electrical duct bank installation project.
