Thieves Steal Cooper Wire Causing Power Interruption to St. Croix Customers

(Tuesday, January 22, 2013)

Service was interrupted today to a section of the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority’s St. Croix Feeder #10 when thieves shorted out a segment of the distribution system and then stole over 1000 feet of copper line from utility poles. The theft, which occurred before noon in the Estate Annally-Mount Victory area on the western end of the island, has affected approximately 30 homes.

Line crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible to the customers in the area which is densely populated with trees and ground foliage.  Every effort is being made to complete the restoration work before dark.

The Virgin Islands Police Department has been alerted and an investigation has been launched. All persons found guilty of the theft of any part of the Authority’s infrastructure will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Anyone with information about today’s copper wire theft should report it to the VIPD.
