Letter to Senate President About WAPA Privatization Legislation

(Thursday, April 25, 2013)

On April 25, 2013, Mr. Gerald T. Groner, Esq., the Chair of the Governing Board of the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority, sent a letter urging Senate President Honorable Shawn-Michael Malone not to consider any legislation that proposes the privatization of WAPA.

The letter begins by saying:

Dear Senate President Malone,

I am writing you in my capacity as Chair of the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority ("WAPA") Governing Board, urging you not to consider any legislation that proposes the privatization of WAPA. Consideration of such legislation at this time may cause real harm to WAPA's current expedited program to convert our facilities to tri-fuel capability and to bring significant relief to our ratepayers by next summer. Even without that harm, privatization of WAPA is simply a bad idea.
