WAPA Update: Christiansted Underground Project Phase II
High Voltage Cable and Secondary Cable Installation Continues

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority and Fortress Electric crews will continue installation on high voltage and secondary cables on Strand Street and King Street in Christiansted from Saturday, June 1, through Saturday, June 8. Work is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily.

Work will continue on King Street in between Prince Street and Queen Cross Street to transfer customers onto the existing Feeder 1 Underground Circuit. Customers in this zone will be notified first by VIWAPA before being transferred.

The installation of high voltage cable will continue on King Street from Prince Street up to Church Street.

The installation of secondary cable will continue on Strand Street on Queen Cross Street up to King Street and Strand lane.

Traffic flow interruption will be minimal as there will be no excavating or trenching of the road during the cable installation. Motorists are asked to observe signs and flaggers’ directions to ensure the safety of workers, pedestrians and other drivers.

The installation of electrical cables is part of the Christiansted Underground Project Phase II which is funded by grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and customer payments into the Self-Insurance and Hazard Mitigation Fund at a cost of approximately $2 million.
