Christiansted Underground Project Phase II Weekly Update

(Friday, June 14, 2013)

Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority and Fortress Electric crews working in Christiansted from Saturday, June 15-22, will be splicing high voltage cables in manholes at Company Street intersections between Church and Prince Streets.  Work is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily. This installation of electrical cables is part of the Christiansted Underground Project Phase II.

Company Street connections to the existing Feeder #1 underground circuit will begin by midweek. Brief electric service interruptions may occur, however, customers will be contacted in advance by the project team to advise of scheduling. Underground connections to the Feeder #1 circuit have been completed on King Street between Market and Church Streets.

Traffic flow interruption will be minimal as there will be no excavating or trenching of the road during the cable installation. Motorists are asked to observe signs and flaggers’ directions to ensure the safety of workers and the public.

The Christiansted Underground Project Phase II is funded by grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and customer payments into the Self-Insurance and Hazard Mitigation Fund at a cost of approximately $2 million.  Once completed, the project will bring greater service reliability to customers and assist in enhancing the attractiveness of the town area.
