WAPA REMINDS THE PUBLIC ABOUT LINE SAFETY AFTER A NATURAL DISASTER

(Thursday, September 14, 2017)

As power restoration is taking shape across the territory, WAPA reminds the public that a downed power line can caused serious injury or death. It is important that everyone steers clear of downed or damaged power lines.

WAPA encourages persons to follow these safety tips following the impact of Hurricane Irma:

• Assume all power lines are energized and deadly:

o Power lines that are de-energized could become energized at any time. A live wire touching the ground can cause electricity to travel through the ground, radiating outward from the contact point. Stay clear!

• NEVER touch a downed power line! And never touch a person or object that is touching a power line.

• If someone is injured as a result of electrical contact, do not touch or move the victim. You can be injured or killed. Call 911.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY GUIDELINES

Following the impact of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Irma, line department crews from WAPA patrol the electric system to locate problems. The safety of your neighbors, utility crews and other emergency personnel can be enhanced during restoration efforts by observing some important guidelines.

• Stay away from downed power lines.

• Install a transfer switch to properly operate your emergency generator.

• Do not cut any power lines.

• Do not operate generators indoors as deadly carbon monoxide gases can build up.

• Do not connect generators to home circuits. Plug appliances directly into the generator.

Prepare your home for power restoration in the event of a service interruption. Customers should make sure their homes are ready to safely receive electricity once power has been restored. Make sure there are no flammable items on the stove, no irons left on or other potentially dangerous situations. When leaving the home for an extended period, customers should switch off their power at the main breaker.
