St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands (February 7, 2026) — The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (“WAPA” or “the Authority”) understands the serious impact the ongoing island-wide electrical outage on St. John has on the community and wants residents and businesses to know that crews remain fully committed and actively working to restore service.
At approximately 5:29 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2026, the transmission line supplying power to St. John tripped, resulting in an island-wide outage affecting feeders 7E and 9E. WAPA personnel mobilized promptly to conduct a step-by-step assessment of the transmission system, opening manholes and examining critical infrastructure.
Throughout the overnight hours, crews continued working and successfully completed testing from Red Hook to the East End Substation. These efforts narrowed the fault to the transmission line segment between Red Hook and the Cruz Bay Substation. Work continued early this morning, with crews completing additional testing between Red Hook and Cruz Bay.
Testing has confirmed that the submarine cable is not the source of the outage. Current findings indicate the issue is likely located on the terrestrial cable between the submarine cable landing site and the Cruz Bay Substation on St. John.
Crews remain in the field focused on locating and repairing the fault on the terrestrial cable. The work is complex and requires precise coordination, but teams are fully committed to restoring service and will continue providing updates as progress is made.
