WAPA Advances Overnight Work to Reduce Ongoing Outages in St. Thomas–St. John District

Apr 05, 2026

ST. THOMAS-ST. JOHN, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (April 5, 2026) – The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (“WAPA” or “the Authority”) acknowledges the continued hardship being experienced across the St. Thomas and St. John district as customers face daily service rotations and unexpected outages due to changes in demand.

Crews continue to work on Unit 27, which remains the most immediate opportunity to increase available power. Repairs on this unit are nearing completion.

Final assembly is expected to be completed tomorrow, with testing scheduled to begin Monday afternoon. Based on current progress, WAPA is targeting to bring Unit 27 online as early as Monday evening, pending successful testing and system performance.

If successful, this additional generation, combined with the Wärtsilä units, is expected to provide sufficient capacity to end service rotations and improve overall system stability.

Work also continues on Unit 15, where a specialized technician remains engaged in diagnostics and troubleshooting. Currently, the majority of resources are focused on Unit 27 to support the fastest path toward increased generation.

Until additional capacity is restored, customers may continue to experience both scheduled rotations and unplanned outages as system demand shifts. WAPA understands how difficult this has been and does not take the community’s support and understanding for granted.

Regarding water service, downtown Charlotte Amalie continue to have intermittent water service due to major leaks along with water production limitations at the Seven Seas Water Group facility. Water pressure is anticipated to be remain low through 11:00 p.m. as crews are assembled to conduct necessary repairs.

Customers are encouraged to stay informed by signing up for WAPA alerts and monitoring official communication channels for updates on the rotation schedule and restoration efforts.
