Oct 31, 2023

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – This past weekend, the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (“WAPA” or “Authority”) attended the annual Energy Fair, held at UVI’s Sport and Fitness Center on St. Thomas.  The event, hosted by the University of the Virgin Islands' Caribbean Green Technology Center in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Energy Office, gave WAPA team members the opportunity to educate community members on many of the Authority's ongoing projects.

Among projects highlighted, WAPA shared updates on the progress of its electrical infrastructure undergrounding, nearly completed composite pole project and the introduction of new generation units at the Randolph Harley Power Plant, alongside other initiatives.

Chavanté Marsh, Director of Project Management at WAPA, expressed her enthusiasm for events of this nature, emphasizing the importance of connecting with residents and explaining the intricacies of WAPA's systems. "We appreciate events like the Energy Fair, as they allow us to engage with the community on a personal level. We believe it is crucial to ensure that our customers are well-informed about the projects and improvements that are enhancing our infrastructure and services."

In addition to answering questions from the community, Shawn Rawlins, Revenue Assurance Manager at the Authority showcased a live “Power-Town” display that revealed how power is distributed and safety measures to take should you encounter live wires.  WAPA also handed out flyers detailing ways to conserve and regulate energy consumption, how to prevent meter tampering and how to sign up for WAPA alerts.

The Authority would like to extend a special thank you to the University of the Virgin Islands' Caribbean Green Technology Center and Virgin Islands Energy Office for hosting a successful event, as we all work to collectively build a more sustainable energy future for the Virgin Islands.

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority Communication’s department is committed to reaching, informing, and connecting with the youngest members of the community to the eldest, through meaningful, transparent and effective communication.
