Authority Provides 35th Legislature with Monthly Update on Vitol Acquisition Progress

Dec 05, 2023

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (“WAPA” or “Authority”) reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and community engagement, providing the 35th Legislature with the latest update on the status of its Vitol acquisition through the Office of Senate President Francis.

In this month’s update, the Authority shared that as previously announced, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has approved WAPA’s grant application for the acquisition of Vitol’s Propane Supply Infrastructure as a subrecipient of The Virgin Islands Housing and Finance Authority (VIHFA).  VIHFA has completed its Capacity Assessment of WAPA, and WAPA continues to work with VIHFA to provide additional information needed by VIHFA.

"Maintaining a transparent and collaborative relationship with the Legislature and our community is paramount for WAPA," stated Andrew Smith, CEO/Executive Director of the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority. "As we have discussed many times, acquiring the Propane Supply Infrastructure from Vitol is a critical step toward ensuring the energy future for Virgin Islanders, and we look forward to completing the purchase in the near future."

WAPA stands ready to assume operations and maintenance of the facility when the transaction closes and intends to do so by keeping the current third-party operations and maintenance provider, Saintnals, in place to ensure operational continuity of the facility.

The Authority looks forward to sharing further updates as the acquisition progresses, affirming its commitment to keeping stakeholders informed every step of the way.

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority Communication’s department is committed to reaching, informing, and connecting with the youngest members of the community to the eldest, through meaningful, transparent and effective communication.
