Authority Continues Efforts to Restore Water Service to Charlotte Amalie

Mar 16, 2023

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (“WAPA or “Authority”) continues efforts today on the island of St. Thomas to resolve a water disruption affecting the Charlotte Amalie district, after a 24-inch water mainline that feeds the downtown core broke early yesterday morning.

The Authority’s Water Maintenance Crews were able to successfully complete repairs to the broken pipe yesterday late afternoon. Upon completion, water valves were opened to restore water to the district. While restoring pressure to the water system, a faulty water valve neglected to completely open, significantly impacting the flow of water, and resulting in continued little to no water pressure for much of Charlotte Amalie and surrounding areas.

This morning the Authority’s Water Maintenance Crews are back on site and will begin the necessary excavation to reach the underground valve, followed by repairs to allow normal water passage to resume. Water pressure restoration is anticipated by early afternoon.

The Authority thanks the community for its patience.
