Road Closures Scheduled in Christiansted And Frederiksted As Water Projects Evolve

Feb 15, 2021

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority advises the public of various road closures that will affect traffic flow in Christiansted, St. Croix as work continues on the water rehabilitation project.

Road closures will commence on Tuesday, February 16 and continue through Friday, March 5. During this time, WAPA contractor, Leumas Engineering, will install a ten-inch water main and other service lines along Hospital Street.

Beginning on Tuesday, portions of the following areas will experience water service interruptions to facilitate the ongoing work: New Street, Eastern Suburb, Little Hospital Street, Gallows Bay, Hospital Street, Tulipan Welcome, Flamboyant Welcome, Eliza’s Retreat, Tide Village, Altona, and Estate Welcome.

Motorists are asked to use alternative routes, such as the Christiansted Bypass, to avoid the road closures. Motorists that must traverse the work area are asked to do so with caution for the safety of the crew, pedestrians, and other motorists.

Additionally, the Authority has scheduled road closures, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each weekday, to facilitate dust abatement initiatives along the Frederiksted Water Rehabilitation Project route. The road closures are as follows:

  • Monday -- King Street
  • Tuesday – Queen Street
  • Wednesday – Prince Street
  • Thursday – King Street
  • Friday – Queen Street

The dust abatement initiatives are aimed at controlling the volume of dust generated by the project while minimizing the adverse impact on area residents and business operators. There are no planned service interruptions in association with the road closures and dust abatement measures.

Both waterline projects, in Christiansted and Frederiksted, involve the replacement of old ductile iron waterlines with new PVC lines. When completed, the projects will improve water quality as well as system efficiency and reliability.
