The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority would like to advise the public that beginning on May 2, 2022, road construction activities will resume on the Midland Road (Route 663) from the Melvin H. Evans Highway to the Queen Mary Highway. Motorists
are advised to exercise extreme caution in those areas as portions of the south-bound lane may be closed off to traffic and full road closure may occur often. Flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control. The purpose of the road closure is
to allow WAPA’s contractor, VI Paving, to install underground electrical conduits to transition the existing overhead service underground.
This one of several federally funded undergrounding projects that will remove overhead electrical infrastructure
transitioning to underground territory wide. Customers can expect widespread undergrounding projects in the upcoming years. Undergrounding our electrical grid will minimize damage from windstorms and ensure more efficient post-storm service restoration.
Once completed, underground electrical service will be provided to the Central High School and other critical facilities along the route. Provisions are also being made for future expansion into lateral streets.
The initial road closures will occur
between the entrances at Cruz St. and Saldana St. along the Midland Rd. Headed South, traffic will be detoured down Cruz St, Colon St, Saldana St, and then back onto Midland Road, and in the opposite direction when headed north. The road closures will
occur from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM daily.
Further traffic updates will be provided as the construction activities progress.
