Authority Provides 35th Legislature with Latest Update on Vitol Acquisition Status

Oct 03, 2023

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (“WAPA” or “Authority”) has provided its monthly update on the status of the Authority’s Vitol acquisition to the 35th Legislature, through the Office of Senate President Francis.

Included in this month’s update, the Authority reiterated that the Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority (VIHFA) submitted its formal application to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on August 17, 2023. HUD acknowledged receipt of the application on August 18, 2023, and has 60 days to review the application.

While the review process is currently underway, VIHFA is also working in parallel on a Capacity Assessment and Environmental Assessment of the Authority. The Capacity Assessment will ensure that WAPA has sufficient manpower, systems, policies, and procedures to accept and administer the grant, while the Environmental Assessment seeks to ensure the facility will not negatively impact the surrounding environment and will not have an adverse environmental or health effect on end users.

As WAPA continues to prioritize an open and transparent relationship with the Legislature and the Virgin Islands community at large, we look forward to sharing additional updates.

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority Communication’s department is committed to reaching, informing, and connecting with the youngest members of the community to the eldest, through meaningful, transparent and effective communication.
