ST. CROIX, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (May 4, 2026) – The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (“WAPA” or the “Authority”) is proud to celebrate Drinking Water Week, observed May 3–9, by connecting directly with students across the territory to highlight the value of drinking water and the importance of water conservation.

The school outreach effort began today at Alfredo Andrews Elementary School, where WAPA introduced primary students to its role in delivering safe, potable water to the community. Students participated in interactive discussions about how water is produced, treated, and distributed, and the importance of conserving this vital resource.

A key part of the visit was a hands-on activity that made the concept of water conservation tangible for students. In teams, they used absorbent towels to move water from one location to another while trying to minimize water loss. The activity generated excitement and laughter while reinforcing the message that every drop counts.

The exercise also provided a practical demonstration of the challenges of water delivery and the importance of minimizing waste. Just as students worked carefully to avoid losing water, WAPA prioritizes efficient water distribution to deliver as much water as possible to customers across the territory.

School visits will continue throughout the territory this week, reaching more students and encouraging them to take an active role in conserving one of the territory’s most precious resources. By tying fun, experiential learning to real-world infrastructure, WAPA aims to build early awareness of water stewardship and foster a sense of shared responsibility among the next generation.

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority Communication’s department is committed to reaching, informing, and connecting with the youngest members of the community to the eldest, through meaningful, transparent and effective communication.
