ST. THOMAS -ST. JOHN, U.S. Virgin Islands (June 30, 2026) – Tonight at approximately 12:00 a.m., the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (“WAPA” or “the Authority”) will temporarily take Unit 27 offline to install a replacement component that recently arrived on St. Thomas. As previously announced on June 23, 2026, repair is an important step toward increasing the unit's generation capacity and significantly improving its performance and reliability.
The installation is expected to take approximately five hours and has been scheduled during the overnight hours when electricity demand is at its lowest. WAPA does not anticipate any impact to customers during the work. However, because Unit 27 will be temporarily unavailable, an unexpected trip or failure of another generating unit could require one-hour rotating service interruptions in parts of the St. Thomas-St. John district.
To support the community celebrations taking place this week, WAPA has planned the work to avoid service interruptions on St. John and maintain reliable service for the island's festivities.
WAPA appreciates the community's continued patience as crews complete this critical repair. While the work requires a brief period of reduced generation, it represents meaningful progress toward a stronger, more reliable electric system for the district.
