Together, We Power Through the Summer Strain

Summer heat drives up energy use—and strains the grid. WAPA is strengthening equipment and adding solutions like solar and battery storage, but we can’t do it alone. By conserving, together we can keep power flowing through the hottest months.

Why Summer Strain Matters

  • Extreme heat = higher demand
When temperatures rise, more people use more electricity at the same time.

  • Stress on infrastructure
Heavy demand puts pressure on generators, lines, and transformers.

  • Risk of outages
Without balance, equipment can overheat, and power plants are forced to work overtime.

That’s why WAPA is preparing with inspections, upgrades and smart energy planning.

What WAPA is Doing

We’re taking steps to protect the grid and keep power flowing, including:

  • Inspecting lines and transformers daily to catch issues before they become outages.

  • Maintaining and strengthening generators so they can handle summer demand.

  • Expanding solar and battery storage to ease the grid during the hottest days.

  • Investing in system upgrades to deliver more reliable service across the Virgin Islands.

How You Can Help

Every action counts. By conserving energy, you help reduce stress on the grid and protect power for everyone. Here are simple ways to make a difference:

  • Unplug devices when they’re not in use.

  • Raise your thermostat a few degrees, i.e. 78 degrees, especially during peak hours (12 PM-2 PM and 6 PM–9 PM).

  • Use fans to circulate cool air and reduce AC load.

  • Delay heavy appliance use (laundry, dishwashers, ovens) until cooler hours.
